Star Trek: Discovery appears to be a series struggling to be seen as related to the Prime Trek universe while simultaneously separating itself from that same world. What is it trying to be? What template(s) is it using to get there? And what should be the models it molds itself after?
The upcoming series seems to have more in common with the look from the recent Star Trek movies than harking back to the aesthetics of The Cage and The Original Series. And it's eschewing standalone episodic morality plays for a season-long serialised story (like the Xindi arc in Season 3 of Star Trek: Enterprise).
One of Gene Roddenberry's rules has been thrown out too.
So where does that leave Star Trek: Discovery? Is it already a series in crisis?
...and what's your opinion?
